Schubert: Piano Sonatas . .has been added to your Cart. The album opens with Schubert's last sonata in B-flat (D960), published posthumously. Many consider this to be the greatest Schubert sonata, and it has been widely recorded. Much as I admire other pianists' interpretations, such as those of Murray Perahia, Radu Lupu, and especially Alfred Brendel, I think that Kempff's are the most lyrical. And lyricism is what Schubert is all about, though always constrained by the formal design of the musical work. I have Brendel's 1972 performance of the B-flat sonata, which is also very fine in it's more emphatic way.
