Rothenburg ob der Tauber is a town in the district of Ansbach of Mittelfranken (Middle Franconia), the Franconia region of Bavaria, Germany. It is well known for its well-preserved medieval old town, a destination for tourists from around the world. It is part of the popular Romantic Road through southern Germany. Rothenburg was a Free Imperial City from the late Middle Ages to 1803. In 1884 Johann Friedrich (von) Hessing (1838-1918) built up "Wildbad Rothenburg .

Dabei wurde der Ostchor 1322 vollendet, nach einer Baupause wurde das Hauptschiff zwischen 1373 und 1436 errichtet. Rothenburg ob der Tauber is one of the oldest and most historic of the medieval towns along the Romantic Road. Although there had been settlements in the area and in the neighbouring Tauber valley for many centuries before, the official history of Rothenburg is generally thought to date from the 10th century with the construction of a castle in an easily-defensible position above the River Tauber (thus "Rothenburg ob der Tauber" - ober meaning above).
