Haydn: Piano Sonatas. Québec pianist Marc-André Hamelin has emerged as a major star of the keyboard in recent years, but this brilliant double-disc set of Haydn keyboard sonatas - a representative 10 out of some 60 the composer wrote - was still hard to see coming. It may well become the definitive single-release choice for Haydn's sonatas, which are too often cherry-picked by the comparatively few big-name pianists who often include them on recordings and recitals.

He makes his home in Boston. Marc-André Hamelin’s first set of Haydn Piano Sonatas was Hyperion’s best-selling release of 2007, and had the critics jostling to acclaim his performances in the highest terms. His second volume, released in a year where new Haydn recordings are. Haydn: Piano Sonatas, Vol. 3. MP3 £. 0.
This is a sortable discography of French Canadian pianist and composer Marc-André Hamelin. He records exclusively for the Hyperion label, although he has recorded for other labels in the past. In addition to the works of commonly heard composers, he has recorded a great deal of non-standard repertoire, such as music of Charles-Valentin Alkan, Leopold Godowsky, Georgy Catoire, Sophie Carmen Eckhardt-Gramatté, as well as his own compositions. Arkiv Music, primary discographical source.
Marc-André Hamelin has made himself noted for his amazing virtuosity when playing composers like Alkan and Godowski et al. But personally I prefer his exquisite way of handling the standard repertoire, for example Schumann's Fantasistücke or Beethoven's last sonata - magnificent playing indeed. So when seeing he has started a Haydn sonata project, my expectations rose. Marc-Andre Hamelin is, arguably, the finest pianist performing today. His choice of repertoire is unfailingly interesting.
Recorded: August 2011 at Henry Wood Hall, London, United Kingdom. Hyperion’s Record of the Month is the third double-volume release in Marc-André Hamelin’s much-praised series of Haydn’s keyboard sonatas. Haydn wrote around sixty keyboard sonatas and this selection of eleven focuses on those from the 1770s, including the great C minor sonata from the.
Haydn wrote around sixty keyboard sonatas and this selection of eleven focuses on those from the 1770s, including the great C minor sonata from the composer’s ‘Sturm und Drang’ period, with its dynamic contrasts and virtuoso demands. These are bookended by three from Haydn’s earliest output from the 1750s, most likely penned for his young female pupils to play, and the D major sonata written during the second of the mature composer’s triumphant London visits in 1794. In all these fascinating, idiosyncratic works, Marc-André Hamelin wears his renowned virtuosity lightly, while playing with understated wit and the elegant, immaculate musicianship that has come to define one of the greatest pianists of our time. The most striking feature of the set is the unfailing superb, crystalline clarity of Hamelin's sound.
Hamelin is most associated with virtuoso fireworks for piano, but he can also miniaturise himself exquisitely to suit Haydn’s wit and elegance. This second volume in his Haydn cycle features ten sonatas and a little fantastia. The spring in his fingers is delightful and the music springs many surprises. Some movements are decorative as wedding cakes; others tease with abrupt contrasts, or suddenly rage with personal grief.
