Beethoven: Symphonies 1-9, Violin Concerto, Overtures. Bernstein recorded the Beethoven symphonies with the Vienna Philharmonic for DG during the late 1970s to much acclaim. Those performances quickly overshadowed Bernstein's earlier set with the NYPO recorded for Columbia in the 1960s. As a bonus, you also get Beethoven's lovely Violin Concerto played by Isaac Stern with Leonard Bernstein and the New York Philharmonic. While others may favor Jascha Heifetz, I've always loved Stern's full, warm and Romantic tone, best of all.

It certainly wasn't the name New York Philharmonic, a name that has been synonymous with scrappy, sloppy orchestral playing for more than half a century. And it certainly wasn't the dim and dull 20-bit re-mastering that Sony has given the Columbia stereo originals. But the name Bernstein, a brand tirelessly promoted for decades, is apparently still a sure-fire way to sell records.

Ludwig van Beethoven composed his Violin Concerto in D major, Op. 61, in 1806. Its first performance by Franz Clement was unsuccessful and for some decades the work languished in obscurity, until revived in 1844 by Joseph Joachim. Since then it has become one of the best-known violin concertos. Beethoven had previously written a number of pieces for violin and orchestra.
