Think of CARL AND THE PASSIONS-SO TOUGH and HOLLAND as one long album, because of its consistent personnel and the overall feel. With the exception of a few clunkers: "Funky Pretty," "He Come Down," and "Leaving this Town" (actually a good song that's too long), the rest are gems. Carl was at the helm and his beautiful vocals, producing and songwriting abilities are showcased.
Learn how the Beach Boys soundly dropped their square fun in the sun moniker on 1972’s vastly underrated, rock ’n’ roll-driven Carl and the Passions - So Tough. The accompanying vintage still presents Marcella b/w Hold On Dear Brother, the only Beach Boys single sleeve to feature a photo of Blondie Chaplin and Ricky Fataar. Unleashed on June 26, 1972, the rockin’ track inexplicably failed to chart. Note keyboard sideman Daryl Dragon of future Captain and Tenille fame behind the driver’s wheel. Their album sales were not much better in America, although the previous album, the critically acclaimed Surf’s Up, demonstrated promise with a surprise placement in the Top 30. The controversial Jack Rieley, who slyly altered his résumé and convinced Carl to appoint him as the group’s latest manager after the failure of Sunflower in late 1970, had a game plan to revert his client’s decline.
I am a huge fan of The Beach Boys. They have been and still are a major influence on my writing. This album is a step away from Pet Sounds, but still has moments of breathtaking genius and experimentation.

Married together as a 2-CD package for the first time, these two long-haired, counter-cultural Beach Boys albums (from 1972 and 1973 respectively) make strange bedfellows. The "Carl and The Passions" name is simply to make The Beach Boys into a "new" band for this record. Sort of the way The Beatles "became" Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band in 1967 for that landmark album. But in this case all it did was confuse a mostly disinterested public. And that's too bad because there are some great songs on this little-heard album. There are a lot of highlights here
