A Hard Day's Night is the third studio album by English rock band The Beatles. It was first released on 26 June 1964 in the United States by United Artists Records and on 10 July 1964 in the United Kingdom by Parlophone. In contrast to the band's first two albums, all thirteen tracks on the album were written by John Lennon and Paul McCartney, showcasing the development of their songwriting talents
The Beatles album A Hard Day’s Night was the The Beatles first record that consisted entirely of original songs. The first two Beatles albums Please Please Me and With The Beatles featured a mixture of songs written by the Beatles and well-known 1950’s and early 1960’s songs. The third song entitled Anna, on the Beatles first album was written by Arthur Alexander. It was followed by Chains, which was written by Carole King and Gerry Goiffin. Chains, was followed by Boys, which was composed by Wes Farrell and Luther Dixon. Wes Farrell would go on to compose many of The Partridge Family.
A Hard Day's Night became their first album to consist solely of original material, and was The Beatles only release to consist solely of songs written by Lennon-McCartney. The title of A Hard Day's Night had been coined by Ringo Starr, and first appeared in John Lennon's short story Sad Michael in his first book In His Own Write. When film director Richard Lester announced it would be the title of The Beatles' first film, Lennon took up the challenge to write the theme song. That’s the American A Hard Day’s Night album originally released on the United Artists label. They got the rights to do the soundtrack as a part of the deal of making a movie.
Released on 10th July, 1964, the Beatles third album in less than eighteen months was timed to coincide with the cinema opening of their first movie. Of the album's 13 tracks seven were featured in the soundtrack of the film. It was also quite remarkable that for the first time on a Beatles album that all of the titles had been composed by John and Paul.
It's possible to hear both songwriters develop their own distinctive voices on the album, but overall, A Hard Day's Night stands as a testament to their collaborative powers - never again did they write together so well or so easily, choosing to pursue their own routes. John and Paul must have known how strong the material is - they threw the pleasant trifle "I'm Happy Just to Dance with You" to George and didn't give anything to Ringo to sing
