He began playing violin at 11, holding the bow in the middle, and laying the instrument across his chest and against his right shoulder. He would play in in this manner throughout his life. In 1972, Guinchard began to appear elsewhere in Newfoundland and was a member in the mid-1970s of the Breakwater Boys in St John's. He made his first LP, Rufus Guinchard - Newfoundland Fiddler (Breakwater 1002), during this period. A third album, Humouring the Tunes (SingSong SS-9091 CD), issued posthumously, included two examples of Guinchard's accordion playing. Of Guinchard's own pieces, the best-known is Centennial Highway Reel, which has also been recorded by Figgy Duff and Red Island. Travelling with Kelly Russell and/or Jim Payne, Guinchard subsequently performed at folk events across Canada (eg the Mariposa, Atlantic, and Vancouver festivals) and at Expo 86, and appeared in the USA, England, Ireland, France, Japan (Expo 85, Tsukuba), and Australia (Expo 88, Brisbane).

For decades, Rufus Guinchard (1899-1990) was the fiddler of choice in communities along the Great Northern Peninsula of Newfoundland, often walking many miles to play for square sets, cotillions, and reels that were the main source of community entertainment. After these dances waned in popularity, he was "discovered" in the 1970s by the folklorists from St. John's, and started traveling the world playing his music.
He’s an excellent fiddler and he played some tune composed by Emile Benoit. Does anyone know if the Newfoundland trad music has an irish influence or scottish influence (like the Cape Breton music). Hi Bert, wonderful to hear that you were able to see Kelly Russell- he is certainly amazing and one of our best. I think there are actually two books now but the most recent has Rufus Guinchard and Emile Benoit tunes. PS I think Kelly is fiddler for the Irish Descendants these days, so you should check them out too if you get the chance. Posted by Cailin Rua 12 years ago.
