Pains Of Being Pure At Heart.
Belong is the second studio album from New York indie band The Pains of Being Pure at Heart. It was released on March 29, 2011 through Slumberland Records in the US and Fortuna Pop! in the UK. The album was recorded in the fall of 2010 after extensive touring in support of the band's debut album. It was produced by Flood and mixed by Alan Moulder. In an interview with Pitchfork, vocalist/guitarist Kip Berman explained that the band "wanted the songs to exist in an immediate and instinctual place
Rather than repeat the 80s indie pop they'd so expertly nailed, Pains trade up to 90s-style alt-rock- a potentially risky gamble- and nail that too. The Pains of Being Pure at Heart landed with a bookish and fuzzy aesthetic, the sound of ace indie pop students mimicking their heroes
The Pains of Being Pure at Heart. The Pains of Being Pure at Heart are an American indie pop band from New York City, formed in 2007. The band currently centers around founding member and principal songwriter Kip Berman (vocals, guitar). Live he is joined by Christoph Hochheim (guitar), Jen Goma (keyboards, vocals), Jacob Sloan (bass), and Anton Hochheim (drums).
They say that the Pains of Being Pure at Heart came out-of-nowhere to release their self-titled debut in 2009. While this isn’t true, it would be an act of tepid historicism to go on and on writing about the splendours of their self-titled EP from 2007, from which This Love Is Fucking Right! and Hey Paul were re-recorded for the debut album, and the two split 7 singles they made in 2008 with the Parallelograms and Summer Cats. For Belong, the Pains' much-anticipated sophomore album, they roped in legendary producers Flood (Smashing Pumpkins, Depeche Mode, Nine Inch Nails) and Alan Moulder (My Bloody Valentine, Ride) to get just one step closer to their influences, and perhaps to give their indie-pop a bit more crunch. They've clearly absorbed the influence of their producers, and fans of Alternative Nation-era records will find something to love.

But as far as I can tell, none can paint a picture of simple and pure bliss like Kip Berman's work as The Pains of Being Pure At Heart. In their best material, love is to be free and unashamed, naive to the presupposed undertones of the situation, not giving a care to the opinions of others - just boundlessly, timelessly in love. Though Days of Abandon is a title that seems to fit every Pains record perfectly (it takes inspiration from the Elena Ferrante novel of a similar name), their third LP, out this week through Yebo, earns the descriptor with brilliant, heartbreaking grace. The cover, painted by Lee Jinju is a pagan masterpiece: two dancers in a state of undress, playing the songs of youth, and crying away tears of lost love while the archetypes of a world begging to be painted in black and white lie disregarded around the scene.
While recording their second album, ‘Belong’, the band also met James Iha – Smashing Pumpkins guitarist and a feted hero of theirs – at Stratosphere Sound, a studio he owns in New York. We got to say hi to him, Kip gushes, and he let us borrow his guitar to record, so if it sounds better than it does normally it’s probably because it was his guitar playing itself. Belong’ isn’t a huge step away from their previous work. But the writing process was very much not a state of being aware and understanding things. Now I can look back and be like, ‘Oh, that’s how that turned out’. I don’t know if that actually clarified things.

NotesPlaybutton pairs the concept of a great album with the classic fan button, and for people who love music it’s a great way to wear your Pains Heart on your lapel. This wearable MP3 player has your same basic technology sense as your iPod - with much better fashion sense. Emblazoned with the album artwork, plug in some ear buds and, like an album, you can play, pause, skip and control the volume with the touch of a button; but unlike an album it is powered by a rechargeable lithium battery.
