The Essentials was released in 2002 and was the second greatest-hits collection of singer Laura Branigan that was issued in the United States. Many fans consider this to be superior to the previous compilation, The Best of Branigan, due to the inclusion of singles "Shattered Glass," "Moonlight on Water," "Never in a Million Years" and her introduction of the rock ballad "I Found Someone", all of which were missing from the previous release. The album is her last to be released before her death in 2004.

Laura Branigan is the sixth album by singer Laura Branigan, released in 1990. The album's second single, "Never in a Million Years", was an AC hit for Branigan. The album also brought the singer back to the tops of the Hi-NRG charts and dancefloors with its first single, "Moonlight on Water", and a trendy update of Vicki Sue Robinson's disco-era "Turn the Beat Around".

American singer Laura Branigan covered Self Control in 1984 and it was released as the lead single from her third studio album of the same name, released the same year. Branigans first major hit had been co-written by Bigazzi, Gloria was an English cover of the 1979 original Italian song recorded by Umberto Tozzi. Shattered Glass was one of two tracks Branigan cut with the Stock Aitken Waterman team, besides Shattered Glass, the PWL session produced Branigans recording of Whatever I Do a Stock Aitken Waterman original previously recorded in 1984 by Hazell Dean.
