Last time Adam Ant released an album, chart success was possible, even expected, so he indulged in his softer side on 1993's Wonderful. Those were different times. Twenty years later, the music biz has fractured and Adam himself hasn't had an easy time of things (the past two decades were littered with tabloid stories of his travails), and he's decided to seize these two events on the wild, sprawling double-album Adam Ant Is the BlueBlack Hussar in Marrying the Gunner's Daughter.

Marrying The Gunner's Daughter. There's a revealing mix of styles here. Some tracks seem to come from the jangle rock period of the "Wonderful" album, where Adam seemed to want to be Morrissey, but there are also a couple of gems showing how influenced he was by his time spent with Nine Inch Nails ("Shrink") and the popularity of Techno-Rock such as Republica ("Bullshit"), in the 90's

Adam Ant Is the Blueblack Hussar in Marrying the Gunner's Daughter is the sixth solo studio album by Adam Ant. The album's title was announced by Ant in the NME in April 2010. As per Adam's announcement at his gig in Chatham in September 2012, the new album was released on 21 January 2013 by Ant's own record label Blueblack Hussar Records.

Adam’s songs were always at their best when they were works in progress and were always worked on over the years – like the many versions of Physical and Whip In My Valise you can track down – there is no set in stone final version and this album captures this approach. It’s like an artist painting several paintings all at once with a heedful of brilliant ideas – the true art is the flash of inspiration and not in the polish. There is the tribute to Malcolm McLaren, Who’s a Goofy Bunny? With the title referencing the Sex Pistols maverick manager’s big teeth in an affectionate tribute to the big inspiration behind Adam and the one he had a curious business relationship with, not content with this there is also a song about Malcolm’s partner Vivienne Westwood called Vivienne’s Tears. Other productions from Adam Ant. Adam Ant Is the Blueblack Hussar in Marrying the Gunner's Daughter. Live at the Bloombury.

Sadly, I've seen this album touted as "Adam Ant's comeback album" which will mislead people into thinking that it's a properly produced and completed new album. Instead it's a collection of demos and outtakes that seem to be compiled from the last few decades. Think of it as a follow up to the "Redux" collection of demos. For me, this album gives a tantalizing glimpse of Adam's genius and hints at what could have been released if a record label had just had some faith in him. But even though this dandy highwayman has been shunned by the major labels, this album, at least, shows that a pirate attitude is still alive and daring to release these recordings without requiring those corporate masters. All said, I'd love to hear finished versions of these songs but, even so, I'm happy to have added this album to my somewhat obsessive Ant collection. Reply Notify me 3 Helpful.

Album Adam Ant Is the BlueBlack Hussar in Marrying the Gunner's Daughter. Marrying The Gunner's Daughter Lyrics. Marrying the Gunner's Daughter You know me, I go too far Like a heifer to the slaughter Here he comes, the Blueblack Hussar. Strapped to a gun ain't much fun But it's all that he had left Got a number one, just for fun Started playing Russian roulette. He got to be a tough monkey So look them in the eye Death by fashion, strapped to a cannon So keep your powder dry.

Let's get to the big questions…Is this a good album? No.OK, so is this a good Adam Ant album?Almost.Erm, is this a good collection of demos and outtakes that a hardcore Ant fan would love?Absolutely!Sadly, I've seen this album touted as "Adam Ant's comeback album" which will mislead people into thinking that it's a properly produced and completed new album. Instead it's a collection of demos and outtakes that seem to be compiled from the last few decades. Think of it as a follow up to the "Redux" collection of demos. How good or bad is it? Well, that depends on your definition of what makes a good or bad album. Anyone, especially casual fans, looking for a well polished album of new Ant material is likely to be disappointed. Those fans, myself included, that have gone beyond the regular album releases and collected those B-side collections, remastered albums, bootlegs, and other fervent fan oriented items, will thoroughly enjoy this album. There's a revealing mix of styles here. Some tracks seem to come from the jangle rock period of the "Wonderful" album, where Adam seemed to want to be Morrissey, but there are also a couple of gems showing how influenced he was by his time spent with Nine Inch Nails ("Shrink") and the popularity of Techno-Rock such as Republica ("Bullshit"), in the 90's. The obvious clue was the inclusion of an early version of "Libertine" from the "Strip" album ("Who's A Goofy Bunny?"), showing that these tracks have been culled from demo recordings made over the last three decades. Although some of the recordings are very obviously demos, once you get past the lack of production values, they do make for a great collection of songs that show us not so much of "what came before" but rather a "what could have been". The brilliant "Cradle Your Hatred" and the cheeky "Punkyoungirl" still shine despite the lack of production value. Those fans that have copies of bootlegs, like "Antmusic For Sexpeople", understand the pleasure of hearing original demos of songs made popular on his albums and B-sides and will likely enjoy this collection. But those that can't understand the "demo version" will probably hate this album. It's understandable, as some folks can't imagine what a song "could be" until they hear the finished version.

Seriously? You meant to release this? About half way through, disbelieving that this was a finished product and just before I turned it off, I went to read other reviews of this work. People are saying that it is edgy and ambitious - to me it sounds like a quick mashup of some drunken noodling around in an empty studio. Sorry, Adam, this is not your best work.
