Edward Elgar's Violin Concerto in B minor, Op. 61, is one of his longest orchestral compositions, and the last of his works to gain immediate popular success. The concerto was composed for the violinist Fritz Kreisler, who gave the premiere in London in 1910, with the composer conducting.

Nikolaj Znaider (violin), Staatskapelle Dresden, Sir Colin Davis. Znaider will also tour the work globally throughout 2010 and will perform the Concerto with the London Symphony Orchestra conducted by Sir Colin Davis on 10 November 2010 at London’s Barbican Concert Hall – the anniversary to the day of the world premiere. Other UK performances include two concerts at Manchester’s Bridgewater Hall on the 13th & 14th October 2010 with Halle and Mark Elder. The recording of the Concerto, conducted by Sir Colin Davis with the Dresden Staatskapelle, will be released to coincide with the beginning of the worldwide tour

Znaider tears into Elgar 's love letter of a concerto with such unquenchable ardor that one fears for his instrument and his heart. He consistently triumphs over every difficulty, and his performance is as emotionally affecting as it is musically impressive. On the podium, Znaider has a true partner in Colin Davis, and together with the superlative Staatskapelle Dresden, they turn in one of the finest recordings of Elgar 's concerto ever made.

Elgar's Violin Concerto turns 100 on Nov. 10. The work is daunting in its length, but intimate in its emotions. Violinist Nikolaj Znaider takes on its challenges on this centennial recording. Nikolaj Znaider has recorded this masterpiece on the very same instrument with which Fritz Kreisler performed the world premiere on Nov. 10, 1910. Znaider believes the 1741 "Kreisler" Guarnerius del Gesu (which is on loan to him by the Royal Danish Theater) has a sonority that suits this concerto even better than the composer himself could have imagined. On this new release, we hear just what he means, as Sir Colin Davis conducts the Dresden State Orchestra in this impassioned performance. As a young man Elgar had aspirations of being a concert violinist

In addition to his acclaimed First Violin Concerto Bruch wrote 8 other works for violin and orchestra, all of high quality, which I commend to those who don’t know them: the Second and Third Violin Concertos, Op. 44 & 58; Adagio appassionato, Op.

Nikolaj Znaider's reading of Elgar's Violin Concerto is revolutionary, writes Nicholas Kenyon. The Dresden Staatskapelle and Colin Davis give gloriously idiomatic support; the open question is how truly Elgarian is Znaider's very 21st-century virtuosity? Topics.
