Recorded (live) at The Village Vanguard, New York City; June 25, 1961. B3 timing listed @ 3:46 on back jacket and @ 3:41 on label. Evans, LaFaro and Motian seem to be so connected as to be of one mind; as if they know where the others want to go, and the playing seem emanate from them effortlessly. It is highly improvisational but not self-indulgent. Most of all, it is beautiful in its balance and its poise.

On the vinyl version of this there are six songs plus one alternate version. It turns out that this album ("At the Village Vanguard") is a compilation released much later by Riverside containing 10 of the 13 tunes from "Sunday at the Village . and "Waltz for Debby", but without all of the alternate takes. For me it is the perfect choice of a good selection from this historic recording session.

Included here in it's entirety, Sunday at the Village Vanguard was the first of the two original LPs culled from the celebrated 1961 Village Vanguard sessions by the Bill Evans Trio. This would also be the last recording by this formation of the group, with Scott LaFaro on bass, and Paul Motian on drums, as LaFaro would die soon after in a car crash, on July 6, 1961, at the age of 25. Evans, who loved LaFaro's playing, would take a long hiatus before forming a new trio. Essential Jazz Classics.
