Los Van Van What we now call Timba began with NG La Banda in the late 80´s, but the musical concept at the heart of Timba, combining Cuban music with modern creative songwriting, began 20+ years earlier with Los Van Van. Led by bassist Juan Formell and still going strong, this group continues to represent the definitive popular sound of Cuba. In 2001 they were honored to receive the Grammy Award for Best Salsa Album-Llegó Van Van, and in 2003 a Grammy nomination for Best Contemporary Tropical Album-En El Malecón de la Habana. Their song Soy Todo (Ay, Dios Ampárame) is a veritable Cuban anthem. Part of Los Van Van´s longevity can be explained by the periodic addition of new young singers. Frequently referred to in Cuba simply as Mayito Van Van and Roberto Van Van, they are two of the most overpowering and creative vocalists since Beny Moré.
Barbara Jimenez was born in Santa Clara, Cuba. Since childhood, she has felt the love for the music and dance, studying music at the Escuela Vocacional de Arte in Cuba with the best teachers, and then followed her studies in Dance to compliment her Artistic career. She now lives in Italy where she has been for 15 years and continued studying with the best Italian teachers. Barbara has been performing with Roly Maden for 9 years throughout Europe with Cuban dances like Afro, Timba, Rumba, Son and Salsa, and also Hip-hop and Reggaeton. As a singer, she has collaborated with producers like Berna.
