A look around the Branch Davidian Compound in Waco, Texas.

Branch Davidians are most associated with the Waco siege of 1993, which involved David Koresh. There is documented evidence (FBI negotiation transcripts between Kathryn Shroeder and Steve Schneider with interjections from Koresh himself) that David Koresh and his followers did not call themselves Branch Davidians  . Vernon Howell's arrival on the Waco compound in 1981 was well received by nearly everyone at the Davidian commune. Howell had an affair with the then-prophetess of the Branch Davidians, Lois Roden, while he was in his late 20s and she was in her late 60s. Howell wanted a child with her, who, according to his understanding, would be the Chosen One.

On April 19, 1993, a fire broke out at the Branch Davidian Waco, Texas cult compound during a raid by the ATF and FBI, killing adults and children. Preparing to Enter the Compound. There were a number of reports that 33-year-old, Branch Davidian cult leader David Koresh had been abusing children. He reportedly would punish children by hitting them with a wooden spoon until they bled or be depriving them of food for an entire day. Also, Koresh had many wives, some of whom were as young as 12. The Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, and Firearms (ATF) also discovered that Koresh was stockpiling a cache of weapons and explosives

The Branch Davidians fell from public view after the disastrous raid of their compound, but they still have a presence in Texas-and around the world. The Branch Davidians began as an offshoot of the Seventh Day Adventist Church, and by the early 1960s had gained control of the Mount Carmel compound in Texas from an earlier group. Learn about the Waco Siege and how cult leader David Koresh lived as a polygamist among his Branch Davidian followers at the Mount Carmel Center. Discover the 51-day siege, which ended in a deadly FBI raid on April 19, 1993.

Branch Davidian: Branch Davidian, member of a religious group that had a 51-day standoff with federal agents in 1993 that ended when the group’s compound was destroyed in a fire. Beginning in March 1959, hundreds of believers gathered at the Texas centre. The failure of the prediction led to the splintering of the movement into several factions. In 1962 Florence announced that she had erred, disbanded her following, and sold Mount Carmel.

The Branch Davidians, which ended following a standoff with the FBI in 1993, are the subject of a new miniseries from Paramount. And you're probably wondering what actually happened in Waco? And who are the Branch Davidians? Brush up on the details here before you watch. In February 1993, the Branch Davidians, an apocalyptic cult under the leadership of David Koresh, got on the radar of the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, and Firearms for amassing illegal weapons. He split from his Seventh Day Adventist community to start the Davidian movement, which was based on the belief that Christ would return to the earth and establish a divine kingdom. Houteff and his followers settled near Waco to prepare for what they believed would be Jesus' imminent return, and eventually they became a self-sustaining community, avoiding most forms of commercial entertainment.
