The last official studio album for Virgin, Hyperborea, was recorded in August 1983. The title refers to the mythological land beyond the cold North wind, an earthly paradise of eternal sunshine. Hyperborea is the nineteenth album by Tangerine Dream. It spent two weeks on the UK album chart peaking at N. 5. No Man's Land" makes heavy use of sitar. Cinnamon Road" also utilizes sitar, but with a conventional pop music structure.

The first time I heard it I was underwhelmed but the subtle ideas come through after a few listens. The first peice 'No Mans Land' is very hypnotic with minimal structure. Next up 'Hyperborea'.

Tangerine Dream set the stage for the style of "artsy" soundtrack music that dominated the '80s. Although Hyperborea is not a soundtrack, it was clearly influential on some of the work the group was hired to do for Risky Business, Flashpoint, Dreamscape, Firestarter, Legend, and close to 20 others. There have been at least a dozen members in this trio over the years, but the assembly of Chris Franke, Edgar Froese, and Johannes Schmoelling proved to be one of the most prolific and influential.
