Stimulated by the virtuosic bassist Tatsu Aoki during a series of freely improvised but purposeful duets, Mitchell utilizes circular breathing liberally, sometimes performing a wild string of notes (such as on "The Journey") and on other selections sticking mostly to one area of his horn ("Glide"). His chops and technique are in top form, and although this avant-garde date will not convert more conservative listeners, it is a fine showcase for the creative talents of Roscoe Mitchell and Tatsu Aoki.

Roscoe Mitchell (born August 3, 1940) is an American composer, jazz instrumentalist, and educator, known for being "a technically superb – if idiosyncratic – saxophonist". The Penguin Guide to Jazz described him as "one of the key figures" in avant-garde jazz; All About Jazz states that he has been "at the forefront of modern music" for the past 35 years. Critic Jon Pareles in The New York Times has mentioned that Mitchell "qualifies as an iconoclast".

Tatsu Aoki is a prolific artist, composer, musician, educator and a consummate bassist and Shamisen Lute player. Based in Chicago, Aoki works in a wide range of musical genres, ranging from traditional Japanese music, jazz, experimental and creative music. Aoki was born in 1957 in Tokyo, Japan into an artisan family called TOYOAKI MOTO, traditionally categorized as OKIYA, meaning a booking and training agent for Geisha ladies in downtown Tokyo’s designated area. Aoki was active performer during the early 70’s in the mist of Tokyo Underground Arts movement. Became a member of Japanese Experimental Music ensemble, GINTENKAI presenting mixture of traditional music and new western music. in 1977, Aoki studied experimental filmmaking at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago.
