I needed to do my first original album, and his playing was masterful, robust, and beautiful. At the time, I didn't realize how suited we were as a team. We're onto our 4rth album together. My advice to new listeners is to listen to a really clear and simple version of a song so you can then hear what the musicians are doing and enjoy their creativity and musicality. Also, you have to see jazz live to appreciate it fully.

Global Mantras is a avant-garde jazz music album recording by PHEEROAN AKLAFF released in 1998 on CD, LP/Vinyl and/or cassette. PHEEROAN AKLAFF - Global Mantras. Filed under Avant-Garde Jazz By PHEEROAN AKLAFF.

Drummer Pheeroan AkLaff utilizes an all-star cast comprised of tenor-saxophonist John Stubblefield, altoist Carlos Ward, guitarist Sonny Sharrock and bassist Kenny Davis for this set of generally intense improvisations. There is an unfinished quality about the avant-garde music with the individual solos being much stronger than the somewhat forgettable melodies, and Sharrock's explosive guitar is greatly underutilized.

Pheeroan akLaff - Fits Like A Glove (Gramavision GR 8207). Pheeroan akLaff - Sonogram (MuWorks Records MUW 1004). Carlos Ward, alto sax; John Stubblefield, tenor sax; Sonny Sharrock, guitar; Kenny Davis, electric, acoustic bass; Pheeroan akLaff, drums, cymbals.

In 1975 Pheeroan akLaff made his first music on the New York stages and began a recording career making hundreds of recordings with innovative composers. He is Executive Director of Seed Artists, and curator at Jamaica Center for Arts and Learning. akLaff is the rare drummer who can make his kit speak as a lead instrument, without rattling off tedious rhythmic rhetoric – Ted Drozdowski.
