"the insanity of the political scene of the 60’s" AKA Public reaction to an Illegal and unjust War by a Corporate Fascist Government. People do tend to forget that the Summer of Love wasn't some happy spontaneous event that just happened because people were feelin' groovy. It was reaction to the horrors of War and a corrupt and uncaring Government and status quo in control of Society that enabled them.
Without a doubt The Yardbirds were one of the quintessential bands of the mid 60’s, setting down and developing a schematic for British blues that’s still used today ... but even The Yardbirds didn’t have all the bugs worked out, matter of fact, it wasn’t until the Yardbirds broke-up, with members going their separate ways, that the genre finally took flight, delivering serious no-nonsense music that’s stood the test of time. So it should be no surprise that a little known American band [with the help of John Peel] found themselves in London, on the vanguard of a the new music scene in 1966. The sound that was sweeping the world was music that was as much for the soul as it was for the mind, and with bands such as The Yardbirds defining a new traditional style of electric blues, there were bands like The Misunderstood who were developing a bluesy garage psych sound that displayed less traditional edges, and a more punchy sound that reflected the ideals of a live show.Sadly this was one of those bands who became casualties of the Vietnam War, with Rick Brown being called up for active duty, dodging the draft by going to India, where he became a diamond merchant, and leaving The Misunderstood to attempt to regroup and set out again ... though with little success. With their flash and style, one can only wonder what The Misunderstood would have developed into had the insanity of the political scene of the 60’s not so deeply effected nearly everyone during those heady days.On this outing you’re gonna hear covers, you’re gonna hear songs that are beholding to others, and you’re gonna hear a spark of something originally satisfying. If The Misunderstood suffer or lack for anything, it would be a producer who could have guided and structured their music, their album tracking sequence, and had the ability to allow their sound to achieve a wider appear without sacrificing their basic ideals and musical visions.Review by Jenell Kesler
