On the cover of Manitas de Plata’s first LP, Guitarra Flamenco, reads John Steinbeck’s endorsement: A great and savage artist. This weekend, the beloved, legendary flamenco guitarist, Manitas de Plata passed at age 93. Rising to stardom in the 1960s, Manitas de Plata was a true virtuoso and widely considered one of the best flamenco guitarists of all time. Manitas de Plata, Spanish for little hands of silver, was a Gypsy from the south of France, and a self-taught prodigy in his Gypsy community. Manitas de Plata (born Ricardo Baliardo; 7 August 1921 – 5 November 2014) was a flamenco guitarist born in Southern France. Despite achieving worldwide fame, he was criticized for not following certain rhythmic rules (compás) that are traditional in flamenco. Ricardo Baliardo was born in a gypsy caravan in Sète in southern France. He became famous by playing each year at the -Mer gypsy pilgrimage in Camargue, where he was recorded live by Deben Bhattacharya.
Manitas de Plata, one of the biggest-selling flamenco artists of all time, died at a rest home in France on November 5. He was 93. In a career that spanned more than 50 years, De Plata broke boundaries in traditional flamenco music and became one of the best-known gypsy guitarists-his atypical rhythm patterns were of particular influence upon the style. Born Ricardo Baliardo in Sete, France, in 1921, he was said to have become an accomplished guitar player by age 9. When his career was gaining momentum, he changed his name to Manitas De Plata-which means little silver hands.
