The Genius of Ray Charles is the sixth studio album by American recording artist Ray Charles, released in 1959 by Atlantic Records. The album eschewed the soul sound of his 1950s recordings, which fused jazz, gospel, and blues, for swinging pop with big band arrangements. It comprises a first half of big band songs and a second half of string-backed ballads
Concord's 2009 compilation Genius: The Ultimate Collection is merely one in a long line of Ray Charles hits packages - not to mention merely one in a long line of releases that have either the word "Genius" or "Ultimate" in their titles - and "Ultimate" may be too strong a word for a collection that has only 21 tracks, but. it nevertheless does function as an excellent sampler of Ray's iconic hits of the '50s and '60s. This samples his Atlantic and ABC recordings relatively equally, ever so slightly favoring the latter.
The fact that Genius Loves Company will be Ray Charles's final new album inspires an unavoidable blue feeling. But it's also a happy reminder that the man spent the last months of his life at work doing what he loved. The overall effect of these dozen duets is autumnal and smooth.
Commencing an extensive Ray Charles reissue program in 2009, Concord Records presents a 21-song anthology of hits titled Ray Charles - Genius: The Ultimate Ray Charles Collection. The volume compiles Charles’ most influential recordings for the Atlantic and ABC-Paramount labels including 1955’s I Got a Woman plus Busted, Georgia on My Mind, Hit the Road Jack and I Can’t Stop Loving You, concluding with his signature 1972 rendition of America the Beautiful. All are digitally remastered from the original tapes. Ray Charles - Genius: The Ultimate Ray Charles Collection chronicles the. The album contains 21 of Charles’ biggest hits, each within its own unique history and meaning. Hit the Road Jack, penned by Percy Mayfield, a pop hit and a 1961 Grammy winner for Charles, opens the collection.
