These "Sinfonie a tre" date from the 1750s and lie exactly on the cusp between Baroque and Classical. Johann Stamitz was the father of the better known Karl Stamitz, and since the discovery of the role of the Italian sinfonia among the roots of the Classical style his influences have been somewhat underestimated. His music, and the orchestra to which he contributed, was known all over Europe, however. The two Stamitz trios are actually more effective than the similar pieces by Gluck, the "name" composer.

Johann Stamitz: Trio (Sinfonia) in G minor O. No 5 Trio (Sinfonia) in C minor O. No 3. Christoph Willibald Gluck: Symphonia in E Trio in F. (Total Time: 63:59). This disc is essential listening for anyone interested in 18th century music. Camerata Berolinensis presents four d "sinfonie a tre" by two mid-18th century masters that are true gems. Those not always happy with "period instrument" recordings will find little if anything to complain about. In fact, these performances find a nearly perfect balance between energy and delicacy, style and virtuousity, scholarship and musicianship.
