Hard Day's Night was the first big one that I did. I had the benefit of having a director who was a musician - Dick Lester - who was quite a good pianist. A Hard Day's Night became their first album to consist solely of original material, and was The Beatles only release to consist solely of songs written by Lennon-McCartney. The title of A Hard Day's Night had been coined by Ringo Starr, and first appeared in John Lennon's short story Sad Michael in his first book In His Own Write. When film director Richard Lester announced it would be the title of The Beatles' first film, Lennon took up the challenge to write the theme song. Rather a feeble line about tiredness, I said.
Years before the advent of DVD, A Hard Day's Night became the first major motion picture to be released in CD-ROM format for the home computer market, with supplementary material included. Of course, A Hard Day's Night will endure - simply because THE BEATLES endure, and this gives us the best sustained look at their performing prowess and all-around joie de vivre. The musical sequences in the film are simply glorious, particularly the orgiastic concert at the end, but even more muted moments such as when the Beatles sneak off to a nightclub to dance and intermingle with other youths to the soundtrack of their own songs; the scene provides a wonderful "you are there" quality to the partying and club-hopping side of Swinging.
