The second disc is that original presentation, which offers orchestrations of four tracks-"Prologue and Main Title," "Klingons," "Stealing the Enterprise," and "Returning to Vulcan"-that differ from those used in the movie, and thus are featured on Disc One.

James Horner’s Star Trek III continues his superlative work for the Final Frontier, with emotional developments of the B-theme (the Enterprise theme ) and Spock’s theme from the earlier film, as well as exotic atmospheres for the all-important Vulcan mysticism that drives the story. The film’s villains, the Klingons, receive a new theme with exciting barbaric instrumentation. FSM’s 2CD set features two programs, both newly mastered from recording engineer Dan Wallin’s first-generation digital film mixes: Disc one features the complete score as intended for the film itself, including such long-desired cues as Grissom Destroyed, A Fighting Chance to Live (featuring the Enterprise’s self-destruct countdown and immolation in Genesis’s atmosphere) and Genesis Destroyed.

Horner's lucid melodies and sweeping orchestral arrangements possess a sense of genuine danger and malice long absent from Star Trek's musical backdrop, climaxing in the profoundly emotional catharsis of "Spock. His efforts lend Trek creator Gene Roddenberry's vision a newfound gravitas. Star Trek II was released on LP by Atlantic Records in a 45-minute program issued on CD by GNP/Crescendo (long out of print).

James Roy Horner (August 14, 1953 – June 22, 2015) was an Oscar-winning American composer, conductor and orchestrator of film scores. He was known for the integration of choral and electronic elements in many of his film scores, and for his frequent use of motifs associated with Celtic music. His first major film score was for the 1979 film The Lady in Red, but did not establish himself as a mainstream composer until he worked on the 1982 film Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan. The film is the third feature film of the Star Trek science fiction franchise and is the center of a three-film story arc that begins with Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan and concludes with Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home. After the death of Spock (Leonard Nimoy), the crew of the USS Enterprise returns to Earth.

However, director Nicholas Meyer refused to return in protest over changes made to the prior film’s ending without his consent. The expert 3-track restoration and digital conversion offers pristine sound quality. Running Time: 115 minutes 47 seconds. Retrograde Records/Film Score Monthly FSM-80129-2 (1984/2010).
