Cromagnon – Cave Rock. Cromagnon 01-06-2012.

Cromagnon was an American experimental band that was active during the late 1960s. Led by t singer-songwriters Austin Grasmere and Brian Elliot, the band released Orgasm in 1969 which was later reissued as Cave Rock.

Orgasm (later reissued as Cave Rock) is the only album by the experimental band Cromagnon, released in 1969 by the ESP-Disk record label. Orgasm was recorded at A-1 Sound Studio in the Upper West Side of New York City in 1969. Phil Spector's Wall of Sound technique, of which producer Brian Elliot was a fan, heavily influenced the album's sound. During recording, band members brought in random people from the street and asked them to contribute to the album.

Cave Rock by Cromagnon. What followed was Cromagnon's (Grasmere, Elliot and the Connecticut Tribe) non-linear journey through the subconscious, weaving together bizarre instrumentation and meter with a psychotic blending of musical styles. Bagpipes, pounding percussion, blood-curdling yelps, chanting, laughing, and billowing subterranean rumblings create the otherworldly soundscape that is Cave Rock.

Just asked my girlfriend what year she thought this album was made .... she hazarded 1988, thinking of Test Dept., Laibach, Meat Beat Manifesto etc. It's from 1969 though - amazing. Truly awesome and uncategorisable album of wigged-out freak-ups. Totally unique, bizarre and strange. No commercial potential whatsoever but extremely gripping and exciting to listen to. Look how many different versions have been released - someone must want it.The first track Caledonia kicks off with some synth blurts and the sound of off-centre caterwauling. It then kicks into a big House type beat (hence the MBM, Laibach etc guesses from my missus) with .... yes, bagpipes and a heavy shouted vocal that just keeps on coming. Those bagpipes are a masterstroke. Totally unexpected. The next track Ritual Feast Of the Libido sounds like Cromagnon man gettin' down in his cave with some good friends 'round the campfire - maybe sharing a mammoth steak. The party really gets going with Organic Sundown. Lots of percussion and more shouting and screaming albeit slightly more conventional sounding than the previous track (conventional in the most extreme sense possible).Track four Fantasy starts up almost like the Beach Boys with some bah-bah-bahs before descending into more vocal bleating, chuckling, droning and more general chaos. Side two (on the vinyl version) has Crow Of The Black Tree... a folky strummed acoustic guitar which ably grounds the song as powerful timpani drums and soaring vocals decimate the landscape. This one goes on for nearly 10 minutes so strap yourself in.Short track of strangled vocals and crooning follows .... titled Genitalia. Like the whole album it's ahead of its time.Another mighty 10 minute track comes next, Toth, Scribe I. This starts low-key with whistling like birdsong and the introduction of electronic drones which build to explosions and heavily distorted drums. Powerful stuff... especially when the battle trumpets kick in.The lone horn seems to signal the end of the world. It can't be the end though as then we get the 2:47 of First World Of Bronze. Poetic pronouncements, harmony vocals and acid guitar bring this primitive yet soulful album to a relatively peaceful conclusion.Kudos for ESP for putting this one out. If you like The Godz or The Fugs you'll probably dig this. An album completely out-there and totally unfettered by the lure of the market.
