These Foolish Things is the debut solo studio album by Bryan Ferry, who at the time was still Roxy Music's lead vocalist. The album was released in October 1973 on Virgin Records, it was a commercial and critical success, peaking at number 5 on the albums chart in the United Kingdom. The album is considered to be a departure from Roxy Music's sound, because it consists entirely of cover versions, mainly of standard songs. The album achieved Gold status by the BPI in the United Kingdom in May 1974. When Ferry was asked about the album, he said "It's a very catholic selection, I've given up trying to please all of the people all of the time. Some will like it for one reason, some for another. And some will presumably dislike it for the wrong reasons though I hope the general point of it will be understood.
Musically,1973 was a very good year for Bryan Ferry. That year saw the release of his debut solo album which happens to be one of his finest collection of cover songs if not the best and Roxy Music's "Stranded"-arguably their best album as well. Seemingly everything Bryan touched that year was golden.

Another Time, Another Place was Bryan Ferry's second studio album as a solo artist. The album reached in the UK charts in 1974. Recording took place in London at Island, Ramport and AIR studios. Like These Foolish Things, Another Time, Another Place is essentially a cover album, with the exception of the last song, which gave its title to the album and was written by Ferry.
Much like his contemporary David Bowie, Ferry consolidated his glam-era success with a covers album, his first full solo effort even while Roxy Music was still going full steam. Whereas Bowie on Pin-Ups focused on British beat and psych treasures, Ferry for the most part looked to America, touching on everything from Motown to the early jazz standard that gave the collection its name.
