Khovanshchina is an opera (subtitled a 'national music drama') in five acts by Modest Mussorgsky. The work was written between 1872 and 1880 in St. Petersburg, Russia. The composer wrote the libretto based on historical sources. The opera was unfinished and unperformed when the composer died in 1881. Like Mussorgsky's earlier Boris Godunov, Khovanshchina deals with an episode in Russian history, first brought to the composer's attention by his friend the critic Vladimir Stasov

Mussorgsky: Without the Sun; Works for Orchestra. The older Abbado disc names it 'The Capture of Kars', which was the title Mussorgsky gave it as an independent work after salvaging it from the wreckage of "Mlada". But, it makes no appearance at all in "Khovanshchina". Here it is as an original orchestral work by Mussorgsky, and a bold march it is with fine swagger and pomp. Bands 7, 8, & 9 now offer something nice, 3 excerpts from the unfinished "Sorochinsky Fair" in the orchestrations by Anatoly Liadov made in 1905. These are: Overture, Gopak, and Parassia's Dumka (sung by Nathalia Gerasimova).

Scherzo (Prestissimo - Allegretto - Tempo I) - USSR State Symphony Orchestra, Yevgeni Svetlanov. Orchestral Suite No 1 in D Minor, Op. 43: IV. Moderato con Moto - USSR State Symphony Orchestra, Yevgeni Svetlanov. Symphonie espagnole in D Minor, Op.

The wide-ranging programme covers two concert pieces (but not the Night on St John’s Mountain in any shape), orchestral music from the operas (but not the glorious Khovanshchina Prelude) and an unexpected choice of song cycle. None of the performing versions is by Mussorgsky himself – not even the Boris extracts nor the Khovanshchina numbers attributed by implication to the composer but surely decked out by Rimsky-Korsakov – though he orchestrated so little that it’s hardly surprising. There is at least an authentic Mussorgskyan earthiness in the delivery
