Artist: CHRCH Album: Light Will Consume Us All Release Year: 2018 Country: USA Genre/Style: Sludge Metal, Doom Metal, Funeral Doom Metal.
There’s no knowing exactly how different listeners will react to Light Will Consume Us All, since the album takes the risk of being at once wondrous and large as well as filthy and crushing, so not all fans will delight in the entire experience. However, this album is definitely a journey whichever way you look at it, and one which could lead you light years away in just a few minutes. When the sonic scope is this large, being consumed is a mostly pleasurable experience. In this sense CHRCH have room to grow in varying the complete experience with a broader range of sounds as they’ve nailed style but touch upon nothing sonically captivating, original or exceptional beyond Rose‘s vocal. Light Will Consume Us All’ is a fine sludge metal record with modernist doom intentions and all of it works well enough without achieving the an certain enlightenment.
The climb atop ‘Light Will Consume Us All’ is less jagged and tumultuous as previous, with some slight shifts in production and line-up providing a lathe to smooth old edges over. Light Will Consume Us All’ is more iteration and refinement than it is a sea-change for CHRCH. No doubt if you liked the first album this will be a solid listen as well.

The album opens with Infinite, a huge sprawling twenty-minute epic that begins with a two-minute intro of clean echoing guitar which is gradually joined by the rest of the instruments as the track builds toward a gargantuan conclusion.
Excellent Northern Cali doom band with a beguiling woman vocalist, churning guitars, a pinpoint rhythm section and atmosphere to burn. If you like anything remotely in the doom realm of things, you need this record.
Building upon this foundation, Light Will Consume Us All also continues Chrch’s narrative, traversing life’s journey of loss, reclamation and, ultimately, finding hope within the darkness. Recorded, mixed, and mastered by Patrick Hills (King Woman, Bog Oak, VRTRA) at Earthtone Studios in Rocklin, California, the album exudes a warm, organic tone, with a sound influenced by traditional doom, psych rock, drone, and ambient music
