Duke Garwood has taken the kind of character-building, detour-strewn route known to many a great artist and vagabond, a path-less-trodden that's made all the difference. Elegantly loose and pleasingly smoky, Duke Garwood's sixth LP, Garden of Ashes, is as crafty as it is subdued. His third release for Heavenly following a 2013 collaboration with American spirit brother Mark Lanegan and his 2015 solo breakout, Heavy Love, Ashes finds the London-based singer/songwriter deep in dusty dream-blues mode. Joined on several tracks by lush-voiced shapeshifters the Smoke Fairies, Garwood is in his bailiwick throughout the set, drifting through spacious landscapes with his rumbling poeticism and dark-toned riffs.

Duke Garwood’s last album, 2015’s trippy Heavy Love, saw him break out of the shadows and into limited acclaim: a British Mark Lanegan soundalike whose own gravelly tone and gravitas were actually equal to Lanegan’s. Garden of Ashes is less heavy on the guitars, but still simmers eloquently with the heat haze of Garwood’s opiated take on the blues – the blues of the California desert, specifically, given the debt to Lanegan and Queens of the Stone Age’s studio.
