Red Chamber plays traditional and contemporary music, ranging from ancient Chinese string band music that is seldom heard in the West, to bluegrass and jazz fusion. The virtuosic performers set the stage on fire with hot licks, power and passion! Featuring only plucked strings, Red Chamber creates a unique sound while performing a repertoire that spans centuries, including music transcribed from the Tang Dynasty (618–907 CE), to modern compositions.

Mei Han learned the plucked-string zheng. Mei Han and Red Chamber: Classical and Contemporary Chinese Music (ARC Music) by Graham Reid. However – setting preconceptions aside if that is possible – this album by a child of the diaspora brings a bigger picture. Mei Han learned the plucked-string zheng tradition in China, travelled extensively and studied ethnomusicology in Canada and is currently an associate professor at a university in Tennessee. As in her life, she crosses musical boundaries. A piece like Dark Red Ruby – written for her by Moshe Denburg – sounds more acoustic prog-rock and closer to emotionally elevating klezmer and bazouki styles.

Closing out the album is a final piece of music written just in time for this album, with sentiments and styles evocative of the Hui peoples in the northwestern portion of China. After all of the ponderous, pastoral music, the album ends on a gentle love song. While the compositions are somewhat hit and miss throughout the album, the playing is never so. All members of the quartet show some obvious mastery over their instruments.
