Sting’s first album of original material since 2003’s Sacred Love, The Last Ship, is also the basis for his late-2014 Broadway production. Sting grew up in the '50s during the dying days of shipbuilding in his town, which was dependent on it. The local industry finally collapsed in the ‘80s. Now Sting pays tribute with a song cycle heavy on Celtic sea chanteys, acoustic instrumentation, and somber, hard-won truths. A lilting song such as August Winds and the ballad I Love Her but She Loves Someone Else let Gordon Sumner, the vocalist, sing at his purest.

The Last Ship is the eleventh studio album by English musician Sting, released on 24 September 2013. It is his first full-length LP of original material since 2003's album Sacred Love. The album is inspired by Sting's forthcoming play of the same name, scheduled to debut on Broadway in 2014.

The Last Ship, his first album of new material in 10 years, is one of those idiosyncratic projects: a companion album to a self-written play about the decline of the Swan Hunter shipyard in Wallsend. Initially, it's alienating; the songs are half rustic folk, half sea shanty, and Sting sporadically drops his voice an octave and breaks into a working-class Newcastle accent. A few listens later, however, it feels brave and touching.

The Last Ship" album is produced by Rob Mathes (Sting, Eric Clapton, Elton John, Lou Reed, Carly Simon) and engineered and mixed by Donal Hodgson.
