Take the opening chord of his Overture to Der Sturm: a singularly overscored sonority that makes the opening chord of Mozart's Don Giovanni sound positively modern. Take the central Andante of the Serenade for Strings: an amazingly trivial tune that makes the melody of Haydn's Serenade sound absolutely profound. Take the Allegro giocoso finale from his F major Symphony composed in 1916: its themes are banal, its rhythms are leaden, its developments are uninspired, and its conclusion is foregone. Ferdinand und Miranda. Sinfonieorchester Basel, Marko Letonja. Spuk neckender Geister.

The Sinfonieorchester Basel (Symphony Orchestra Basel; Swiss abbreviation SOB) is a symphony orchestra based in Basel, Switzerland. Its principal concert venue is the Musiksaal of the Stadtcasino. In addition, the orchestra accompanies ballet and opera productions in the Theater Basel. The orchestra was founded in 1876, in the same year as the music hall Basel (Stadtcasino Basel) was constructed.

Overture - Felix Weingartner. The performances are overall very persuasive; the Basel forces under Marko Letonja provide lush textures and beautiful colors, even if it would apparently be possible to drive the music a little harder. The sound is warm, ambient, present and well-balanced (I have only heard the regular stereo version). For instance, Weingartner incorporates a brief brass chorale in the finale of the symphony, but the music refuses to get weighed down by this, and the chorale is overtaken by move cheerful, lively ideas at the conclusion of the work. This music strikes me as being well-crafted with any individual moment being engaging. Yet, the work, as a whole, drags in parts and I found myself disinterested in some of the longer sections. This, however, may be a criticism of this school of music, as opposed to Weingartner's mastery of it.

Felix WEINGARTNER (1863-1942) Der Sturm - Overture (1918) Der Sturm - Suite (1918) Serenade for String Orchestra (1882) Symphony No. 4 in F major op. 61 (1916) Sinfonieorchester Basel/Marko Letonja rec. Casino Basel Musiksaal 8 Sept 2003. DDD CPO SACD 777 098-2. Weingartner's music suffered the fated meted out to the music of so many conductors who also composed. The overture to Der Sturm (Shakespeare’s Tempest) is an amalgam of Berliozian poetic flyaway delicacy and Lisztian Mephisto. There’s also a boiling, not to say deafening, whirl of sound; onomatopoeic in the manner of Sibelius’s, Nystroem’s and Britten’s storm pictures. That violence takes on a heroic and optimistic character at the end.
