B-A-B-Y" is a song written by Isaac Hayes and David Porter, which was first recorded in 1966 by Carla Thomas. Her version was released as the opening track of her album Carla, and as a single by Stax Records. The single reached no. 14 on the US pop chart and no. 3 on the R&B chart. The song was recorded in the UK in 1967 by The Ferris Wheel, featuring singer Diane Ferraz. It was also recorded in 1977 by American singer Rachel Sweet, whose version on the Stiff label reached no. 35 on the UK singles chart.

Carla Venita Thomas (born December 21, 1942) is an American singer, who is often referred to as the Queen of Memphis Soul. She is the daughter of Rufus Thomas. Thomas was born and raised in the Foote Homes Projects in Memphis, Tennessee. Along with her siblings, Marvell and Vaneese, she was one of three musical children of Rufus and Lorene Thomas.

The third Stax Records album by soul singer Carla Thomas, ‘Carla’ remains a potent artistic statement featuring the huge hit crossover single ‘B-A-B-Y’. Published on. October 29, 2018. B-A-B-Y’ was a huge crossover single. It first charted in the US R&B singles chart in September 1966 and eventually plateaued at an impressive N. (significantly, it also broke into the US Hot 100, making N. 4). A Memphis native, Carla Thomas – whose beguiling voice was a blend of sweetness and toughness – was something of a Stax veteran by 1966, having joined the label in 1960, when it was still known as Satellite Records.

Although Thomas would release albums in the 1990s and in the 2000s, she is best known for the work she completed for both Atlantic Records and most notably, Stax Records in the 1960s. Her first record, Cause I Love You was a duet with her father, with brother Marvell on keyboards, that was released by Satellite Records, which eventually became Stax Records.
