It is traditionally ranked as being in the top handful of orchestras in the world, distinguished amongst peers for its virtuosic and compelling sound. The orchestra’s history has always been tied up with its chief conductors, many of whom have been authoritative and controversial characters, such as Wilhelm Furtwängler and Herbert von Karajan.
