Signal-to-noise ratio (abbreviated SNR or S/N) is a measure used in science and engineering that compares the level of a desired signal to the level of background noise. SNR is defined as the ratio of signal power to the noise power, often expressed in decibels. A ratio higher than 1:1 (greater than 0 dB) indicates more signal than noise.

The signal to noise ratio (SNR) is some measure of how the signal is ‘clean’, . free from distorting artifacts that affect its comprehensibility. It’s a ratio of S/N, where S and N is some measure of the energy or power of the signal (S) and noise (N). So if the noise energy is very low, S/N will be very high and vice versa. As an example, consider images. Images can get noise from various sources: communication, low lightness and more. Here I just added artificial noise (additive white Gaussian noise) in various variances sigma^2 that correspond to the noise power, and used the PSNR measurement which is equivalent to SNR (in dB) for images.
Signal-to-noise ratio (SNR or S/N) compares levels of the signal against noise, often expressed as a measurement of decibels (dB) in relation to audio. A signal-to-noise ratio specification of 100 dB is considerably better than one that is 70 dB (or less). For illustration, let's say that you're having a conversation with someone in a kitchen that also happens to have a particularly loud refrigerator. Let's also say the refrigerator generates 50 dB of hum (consider this as the noise) as it keeps its contents cool - a loud fridge.
Questions related to Signal to Noise Ratio. Signal-Noise Ratio η -10log10(1/y^2 ). Will it not make all the values negative? SN Ratio. This is one way to get a very good signal to noise ratio for inter-stellar communication. Advanced civilizations are likely to learn this and exploit these parts of the spectrum to tell others about their existence. Are there sensor arrays with high spectral selectivity?
The Signal-to-Noise Ratio, SNR, S/N, measures how well an object is measured. Typical values: S/N 2-3: object barely detected. S/N 5: object detected, one can really start to beleive what one sees. S/N 10: we can stat to do measurements. S/N 100: excellent measurment. Second aspect: the signal-to-noise increases as the square root of the TOTAL time t NDIT. This means that the S/N will not be affected if we take 1 exposure of 3000s or 10 exposures of 300s (as long as each of the individual images is sky-noise dominated). In many cases it IS advantageous to split the exposure time in many exposures.
The ratio of a signal to the background noise floor is called the signal-to-noise ratio. Abbreviated S/N, and usually expressed in decibels. Sometimes the S/N is evaluated at the maximum signal before overload distortion, which produces the largest number, but is only relevant when the signal level is actually at its maximum. The instantaneous voltage as seen on an oscilloscope will be much higher than the nominal or short-term average level described above. Normally on well-recorded material this difference, called the peak-to-average ratio, is in the range of 12dB to 20dB.
