The Wild Swans are a post-punk band from Liverpool, England, which originally formed in 1980 shortly after Paul Simpson (ex-keyboards) left The Teardrop Explodes. The band's personnel has been subject to regular turnover, with vocalist Simpson being the only constant member. The original incarnation of The Wild Swans lasted until 1982, issuing one single. A reconstituted version of the band issued two albums from 1988 to 1990 before dissolving again.

The Wild Swans' Space Flower follows XTC (masquerading as the Dukes of Stratosphear) and the Damned into the more pop-oriented side of the '60s: the sort of area that could produce a three-minute single and a ten-minute hallucinogenic mind-blower. Pink Floyd got to be quite masterful at this aspect of things with Syd Barrett; the Moody Blues, too, used to be able to do this to a degree. Typically, the Wild Swans, with a somewhat softer sound than they've had previously, have followed in this rather English area, twenty-some years down the line

It's right between The Cure circa "In Between Days" and The Comsat Angels circa "After The Rain" - big, bright, jangly songs with lots of synths, theatrical vocals, and a fetching touch of melancholy. There are a few interesting subtleties that emerge after a few listens, like the lyrical solo at the end of "Bitterness. After getting the band's Space Flower album, I thought that I should give this another chance. Paul Simpson has a strange (not unlikable) voice that's not easy on the ear and the lyrical material is somewhat dreary. The playing and production is good but not sparkling and the whole album feels repetetive and forgettable.
