That’s The Spirit is BMTH’s fifth studio album. It shows a development of the sound introduced on 2013’s Sempiternal, moving away from the metal and deathcore style of older material. Frontman Oli Sykes cited a wider range of influences such as Jane’s Addiction, Radiohead, and Interpol on this record. Critics have praised this evolution, even as many fans expressed disappointment in the less heavy, stadium-friendly sound. The album was self-produced by keyboardist Jordan Fish and Oli. The title is a reference to the refrain of Happy Song, which ironically samples a high school pep rally

That's the Spirit is the most commercial album you've written. At what point did you decide to ditch deathcore and metalcore and write popper music? And why? You make it sound like an ex-girlfriend! I don’t think we ever ditched it outright. Bring Me the Horizon's 'Drown' Debuts Big on Hot Rock Songs. Were there any albums or artists in particular that you were inspired by on the new album? The digital aspects are inspired by artists like Bjork and Massive Attack, but we have a real love for ‘90s Britpop - bands like Oasis and Blur. Everything inspired us on this record: classic rock, hip-hop, jazz, stoner, doom. Were you worried about backlash from the fan base that's been with you since the beginning? I'd be lying if I said I wasn't.
Worst Bring Me The Horizon album. This album disappointed me the most in my lif. xpand. 10 of 25 users found this helpful. However, what bothers me the most is the almost endless presence of the singing of Oli Sykes, who we all know cannot actually sing, which only further serves to push the fact that this album is an overproduced pile of pop garbage made exclusively for a radio audience that isn't interested in it at all because it isn't 2003 anymore.
That they manage to keep the edges of those populist tendencies razor-sharp is what keeps That's the Spirit from dissolving into a puddle of alt-rock/nu metal bandwagon treacle. Standout cuts like "Throne," "Drown," "Doomed," and, most auspiciously, the fevered, pom-pom-led "Happy Song" are as snarky as they are apoplectic, with frontman Oliver Sykes, who relies almost solely on his clean voice this time around, delivering the bad news with measured conviction
