It doesn't take long, listening to this recording of Brahms' Ein deutsches Requiem with Otto Klemperer leading the Philharmonia Orchestra and Chorus, to understand its iconic status as one of the outstanding recordings of the work. In the opening measures of the first movement, "Selig sind, die da Leid tragen," Klemperer creates an ethereally transparent texture that blossoms throughout the movement into a mood of luminous serenity. Dame Olga Maria Elisabeth Friederike Schwarzkopf, DBE (9 December 1915 – 3 August 2006) was a German-born Austro-British soprano. She was among the foremost singers of lieder, and was renowned for her performances of Viennese operetta, as well as the operas of Mozart, Wagner and Richard Strauss. After retiring from the stage, she was a voice teacher internationally. She is considered one of the greatest sopranos of the 20th century.

Recorded in 1961 and released on CD in 1999 by EMI Classics (re-released in 2010 as part of the EMI Masters series). Rafael Kubelík conducting the Bavarian Radio Symphony Orchestra. This disc and that of Klemperer with the Philharmonia Orchestra present two complementary (and complimentary) pictures of the Brahms Requiem. The set features all four symphonies as well as the Academic Festival Overture and Tragic Overtures and the Haydn Variations. In 1961 Klemperer returned to recording Brahms by committing his classic performance of Ein deutsches Requiem to disc. With the soprano Elisabeth Schwarzkopf and baritone Dietrich Fischer-Dieskau as soloists and the magnificent Philharmonia Chorus this recording has remained a firm fixture in the EMI Classics catalog since its first release.
