Grrr is the second studio album by South African musician Hugh Masekela. It was recorded in New York City and released in 1966 via Mercury Records. Grrr was re-released on LP in 1968 on Wing/Mercury labels as Hugh Masekela and on CD in 2003 on Verve label. On this record, he seamlessly fuses jazz ideas with the rhythmically complex South African music known as Mbaqanga.
From the joyous opening strains of the South African oldie "Skokiaan," to the haunting groove of "Moonza," Alpert wholeheartedly melts into Masekela's distinctive idiom, his trumpet a relaxed foil for the South African exile's blazing flügelhorn. But Masekela can also lean the other way, joining Alpert in TJB-like dual harmony on "Ring Bell. The band is mostly a coterie of . sessionmen, but they can swing along to the township jive pretty well, and they have some excellent musical material (mostly by Semenya) to work with
A little background: Herb Alpert had produced a wonderful album by South African singer Letta Mbulu and was interested in experimenting with African music himself. But he kept getting stumped and decided to call a friend of his, fellow producer Stewart Levine. By chance, Hugh Masekela was staying at Levine's home and answered the call. African Summer" is actually a solo Alpert piece, recorded as a 'B' side to the single "The You In Me" the year before. I'll Be There For You" is basically a solo piece for Masekela, and is a lovely ballad. Raised on that stuff and I love it still Many years later I discovered the music of Hugh Masekela and also became a big fan o fhis music. Masekela was a true jazz giant, one that I don't think ever got the proper acclaim he deserved. I missed this album when it came out originally back in 1978.
