The Walker Brothers were an American pop group of the 1960s and 1970s that included Noel Scott Engel (eventually known professionally as Scott Walker), John Walker (born John Joseph Maus, but using the name Walker since his teens) and Gary Leeds (eventually known as Gary Walker)
The single shot up the . chart, the Walkers were all over the TV, and the album of the same name was the most eagerly awaited of the season. Okay, that's not strictly true. It had its moments - usually the Scott vocals, but occasionally John got a gem in as well. His reggae take on Curtis Mayfield's "He'll Break Your Heart" is a widescreen epic of echo-laden summertime, rivaled in punch only by Scott's closing "Burn Our Bridges.
When the The Walker Brothers reconvened in 1975, they settled in to record a new album at Marquee studios in London. Sifting through hundreds of contemporary albums looking for songs to cover, they alighted upon Tom Rush’s No Regrets from his 1974 album Ladies Love Outlaws. This was in turn a re-recording of the song that the East Coast singer-songwriter had written and recorded back in 1968 on his sixth album, The Circle Game. The set, to be performed by singers such as Jarvis Cocker and John Grant, will be drawn from the period between 1967 and 1970, so it seems unlikely that No Regrets will feature. Which is a shame, because the song remains one of the most poignant and affecting of The Walker Brothers’ career, a song that threads together the beauty and emotional potency of Scott Walker’s youthful music with the existential darkness he was travelling towards.
