Max Steiner, Charles Gerhardt, National Philharmonic Orchestra - Max Steiner's Classic Film Score "Gone With The Wind" FLAC album

One of the greatest film scores composed for a motion picture, this epic sweeping score from Max Steiner was composed at the very nascent stages of film scoring, yet he came up with this epic masterpiece for this classic. At the heart of this score is the unforgettable Tara's Theme which plays at the most important moments in the film.

Charles Gerhardt's Classic Film Scores series was a major revelation at the time of its formal beginning, at RCA in the early '70s - true, none of the music was represented in its entirety, but unlike other, similar efforts to re-record classic film music in something resembling optimum form, at least the orchestrations were close (if not identical) to. the originals, and the technology was state of the art for the early '70s, which was (and is) fine

The orchestra was incorporated as the National Philharmonic Orchestra in 1970 and Gerhardt himself conducted it in standard repertory, contemporary works, and film score music. Leopold Stokowski made some of his last recordings with this same orchestra. Gerhardt had received some training in conducting, as well as advice from Jascha Horenstein. The series continued with albums devoted to Max Steiner, Miklós Rózsa, Franz Waxman, Alfred Newman, Dimitri Tiomkin, Bernard Herrmann and John Williams as well as albums devoted to music in the films of Bette Davis, Humphrey Bogart, and Errol Flynn. A number of additional pieces were recorded but remain in the vaults. BMG reissued the Classic Film Scores on CD encoded in Dolby Surround. In 2010, RCA Sony rereleased six of the original CD releases. In 2011, additional albums were reissued.

Gone With the Wind: Max Steiner's Classic Film Scores. Age had not diminished Waxman one bit. and his score far surpassed the film it accompanied. It got him his final Academy award nomination though the Oscar went to the juggernaut known as Lawrence of Arabia. Waxman was a musician through and through and in the spare time he had, he founded the Los Angeles International Music Festival, dedicated to classical music. Gerhardt conducts the National Philharmonic Orchestra and takes many of Franz Waxman's iconic movie scores and arranges them almost note for note from their original source, but of course with much better sound quality. A few pieces like "Sunset Blvd" and "A Place In The Sun" he arranges like a symphonic picture, but he is still true to the original source.
