Guided by Voices (GBV) is an American indie rock band formed in 1983 in Dayton, Ohio. It has made frequent personnel changes but always maintained the presence of principal songwriter Robert Pollard, who founded the group with guitarists Mitch Mitchell, Tobin Sprout, Jim Pollard, and drummer Kevin Fennell.

That’s a lot of work for a troupe of severely liver-damaged men in their fifties. And, unfortunately, with ‘Motivational Jumpsuit’, the cracks are beginning to show. British invasion, noise, prog, power-pop and a healthy disdain for traditional song structure: all the elements for another joyously madcap GBV outing are here, but it all comes off rather uninspired. Over their 20-plus albums there’s been the odd misfire, but this time around it really feels like they’re just going through the motions.

Pollard knocks out quick pop gems and Tobin Sprout once again succeeds as his gauzy pop counterpart. It's a set that feels less obligated to be lo-fi than Let's Go Eat the Factory, less willfully strange than English Little League, and finds its cohesion in forgetting all about being cohesive.
