Album · 2006 · 10 Songs. Artist In Residence Jason Moran.
Pianist/composer Jason Moran has never made the same album twice. While his Bandwagon group with bassist Tarus Mateen, drummer Nasheet Waits and, of late, guitarist Marvin Sewell, remains a constant presence on all but his 2002 solo record Modernistic, it's the only constant in a recorded career marked by a restless insistence on trying out new things. Artist in Residence once again puts Moran in unexplored territory. It collects various commissioned pieces from Minneapolis' Walker Art Center, the Dia Art Foundation, and Jazz at Lincoln Center
People may initially have a hard time with Artist in Residence. But it moves so freely and yet so purposely that it draws the listener into its unique soundworld slowly but deliberately, and offers plenty for the effort.

Like Geri Allen, Jason Moran is another contemporary African-American jazz pianist with broad tastes and a strong sense of cultural history. Less song-oriented than Allen, he is more inclined to use today's street rhythms, free jazz, and a cut-and-paste attitude to all kinds of material, his own included. This intriguing set integrates three works commissioned in 2005, involving African-American slave culture, and conceptual and performance art collaborations
