Liberace began playing the piano at age four. While Sam took his children to concerts to further expose them to music, he was also a taskmaster demanding high standards from the children in both practice and performance. Liberace created a publicity machine which helped to make him a star. Despite his success in the supper-club circuit, where he was often an intermission act, his ambition was to reach larger audiences as a headliner and a television, movie, and recording star. Liberace began to expand his act and made it more extravagant, with more costumes and a larger supporting cast. His large-scale Las Vegas act became his hallmark, expanding his fan base, and making him wealthy. Liberace recreates-if that is the word-each composition in his own image. When it is too difficult, he simplifies it. When it is too simple, he complicates i.

Thorson moves in with Liberace and becomes his lover. At this point, Thorson says that he is bisexual because he is also attracted to women. Liberace is sympathetic, informing him that he wanted and tried to love women, but was exclusively attracted to men. He relates a story of a "divine healing" in which a "messenger" informed him that God still loved him. It gradually becomes clear that Liberace is trying to mold Thorson into a younger version of himself. Thorson agrees and drives to Liberace's retreat house in Palm Springs, where he and Liberace have one last, emotional conversation. Liberace dies a few months later in February 1987.

Explore the life of pianist Liberace, from his start with the Chicago Symphony Orchestra to his time in Vegas, on Biography. Liberace was a flamboyant pianist who twice had his own TV show and frequently performed in Las Vegas. Born in Wisconsin in 1919, Liberace appeared as a soloist with the Chicago Symphony Orchestra at age 16. He later began giving concerts in flamboyant costumes with ornate pianos and candelabra, playing primarily popular music. Very successful, he hosted his own TV variety series, The Liberace Show (1952–55, 1969), and appeared in films such as Sincerely Yours (1955). In later years he performed frequently in Las Vegas.

Liberace turned the flak to his advantage, fashioning a personality he could extend onstage. Only I know what I can get away with, he says. When I walk onstage I look at everybody’s face, particularly the men’s. Nevertheless, Liberace is delighted to reveal his new fascination with pornographic movies. Two Christmases ago, I bought a television that can tape and show movies, he says with a feral glint in his eyes. So I went to a place that sells movies and I came home with True Grit, Nasty Habits and Inside Jennifer Welles.

While alive, Liberace was fiercely private about his homosexuality. But Thorson’s life appears just as interesting, at least the parts that one is able to believe. In 1982, Thorson says he and Liberace abruptly parted ways when the extravagant star kicked him out of their Los Angeles penthouse, in part because of the younger man’s drug use. Tell all: Thorson penned a book, 'Behind the Candelabra,' in 1988 which has become a soon-to-air HBO film.
