When Columbia Records bought Nyro's back catalog, they reissued the material under the title The First Songs in 1973 as a stopgap release during her self-imposed exile from 1971 until 1976. Pop music enthusiasts will recognize many of the songs, as they became international hits for other artists. Wedding Bell Blues" and "Blowing Away" are signature tunes for the Fifth Dimension. And When I Die" likewise became best known by Blood, Sweat & Tears.

Laura Nyro (/ˈnɪəroʊ/ NEER-oh; born Laura Nigro, October 18, 1947 – April 8, 1997) was an American songwriter, singer, and pianist. She achieved critical acclaim with her own recordings, particularly the albums Eli and the Thirteenth Confession (1968) and New York Tendaberry (1969), and had commercial success with artists such as Barbra Streisand and The 5th Dimension recording her songs. Her style was a hybrid of Brill Building-style New York pop, jazz, rhythm and blues, show tunes, rock, and soul.
First Songs' is more dynamic, more full of life force. The music on this CD speaks for itself - all of the arrangements on this album contain a beautiful blend of every element of modern music - pop, rock, jazz, blues, and there are classical influences also. Laura Nyro was one of the most original and brilliant artists in popular music. All you have to do is listen to this CD and it will be obvious that it is the work of a musical genius. My first exposure to Laura Nyro was in early 1967 when she appeared on Dick Clark's "Where The Action Is". There was this incredible young barefooted girl singing "Wedding Bell Blues" and "Goodbye Joe". I couldn't believe my ears, she was so good. I owned a copy of this album in vinyl when it was released by Verve/Forecast. I literally wore the album out listening to it over the years.
