Pavement was an American indie rock band that formed in Stockton, California in 1989. The group mainly consisted of Stephen Malkmus (vocals and guitar), Scott Kannberg (guitar and vocals), Mark Ibold (bass), Steve West (drums) and Bob Nastanovich (percussion and vocals). Initially conceived as a recording project, the band at first avoided press or live performances, while attracting considerable underground attention with their early releases.

In a sense, Pavement was the ideal mixtape band: Their tracks rarely broke the five-minute barrier, and nearly every one could yield gnomic postulates for the title (or at least the subtitle). The first few records, too, looked like musical care packages, blanketed with indecipherable fragments, collaged scraps, and detourned photos. Of course, it took a lot of sweat to produce something so seemingly tossed-off

Pavement disbanded before the turn of the millennium. Still, the impact of the Stockton, Calif. band’s music still echoes in the 21st century, due to its independent ethos, occasional disregard for melody, and progressive view of art rock and punk. Even setting aside all the bands clearly influenced by Pavement, the group’s five-LP output makes them one of the most important alternative rock bands of the ’90s. And now the band has announced at least two reunion shows-at Primavera Sound in Barcelona and Porto next year. Here are the 15 best songs from indie rock legends, Pavement. 14. Father to a Sister of a Thought Wowee Zowee is Pavement’s most experimental album. A lot of that is manifested in weird, short songs that sometimes seem to just be jokes (looking at you, Serpentine Pad ).

Before their first studio album, 1991’s Slanted and Enchanted, Pavement were a seething, primitive beast. Debris Slide, from the Perfect Sound Forever EP, recorded over two frantic days at the end of 1989, then not released until April 1991, is a perfect introduction to the universe of those early days: bristling noise, ramshackle chaos, and sludge, all wrapped up in a weirdly artful tunefulness. For all their wry preening, there was a heart pulsing (gently) through Pavement; the sleepy romance of Here is a moment of real beauty. Back when the band was still little more than Malkmus and Spiral Stairs, this was as straightahead a ballad as they could make, but of course this is Pavement, so it was delivered in a rueful, woozy way. A sleepy, melancholic lead guitar picks out a simple, resigned melody, playing a perfect counterpoint to a deflated Malkmus singing softly about failure.

"a selection of 4AD artists; spring 1996"
Just noticed that the version of Tarnation's "Halfway To Madness" on this is not the same recording as on their Gentle Creatures album. It's a slower, longer take (5:36 vs 4:39). It's good too! There seem to be two other exclusive tracks on this compilation: Heidi Berry's "The Devil" doesn't seem to have appeared anywhere else in any shape or form and Mojave 3 "Mercy (KCRW Acoustic)" is an exclusive version.
