Stephan Micus is an extraordinary musical traveller, exploring the world, collecting instruments and then creating his own musical worlds from them 23rd album for ECM and on each one he composes the tracks, plays and overdubs them to create unique and exquisite pieces of chamber music. The ten tracks on ‘White Night’ particularly rely on the sound of various sub-Saharan kalimba (thumb pianos) and the oboe-like Armenian duduk. I dedicate this album to the moon which has always been a source of magic in many cultures, says Micus
Desert Poems both consolidates and expands Stephan Micus's solo quest to fashion a music of archetypal, world-ranging import: music-often modal in nature-which would be both as old as the proverbial hills, yet as fresh as tomorrow. Stephan Micus makes music completely unlike anyone elses. This is beautiful album of pieces that sooth the mind and touch the soul. The virtuosity of his playing and recording are extraordinary, but far more so is the inspiring spiritual beauty which shines through.
