There was a time when the words classical music were automatically associated in the public mind with symphony and philharmonic orchestras playing instrumental music by famous composers such as Bach, Beethoven, Strauss, Tchaikovsky and others long ago. Perhaps the image was never entirely accurate but, as I've discovered over the last few years, classical music (like jazz, country, folk, pop, rock, etc) is a fairly meaningless term these days that covers a wide spectrum of different sounds and styles
