Road Trips Volume 3 Number 2 is two-CD live album by the American rock band the Grateful Dead. The tenth in their "Road Trips" series of albums, it was released on February 24, 2010. It contains the complete concert recorded on November 15, 1971, at Austin Memorial Auditorium in Austin, Texas. This concert was the 16th concert after Keith Godchaux joined the Grateful Dead on piano. Ron "Pigpen" McKernan did not perform at this or any of the October and November, 1971 concerts due to poor health.
The Wall of Sound was an enormous public address system designed specifically for the Grateful Dead's live performances in 1974. It was the creation of audio engineer Owsley "Bear" Stanley. The Wall of Sound fulfilled Owsley's desire for a distortion-free sound system that could also serve as its own monitoring system. The Wall of Sound was the largest concert sound system built at that time.

The Dead are in a relaxed, mellow mood, yet they also sound unusually lithe as they concentrate on a set that's heavily weighted toward cowboy songs and folk. The big exception is the "Weather Report Suite" that closes the first set, but even that winding epic benefits from this slyly sinewy attack. The Dead may be taking everything easy - "Playing in the Band" doesn't rock hard, it descends into jazzy interludes - but there's strength behind their attack, and that's why this performance is worth hearing.
After the Grateful Dead's third keyboardist, Brent Mydland, died on July 26, 1990, the band replaced him with Vince Welnick and also brought in pianist Bruce Hornsby on a part-time, temporary basis. So, when the group arrived at Madison Square Garden in New York for a series of shows in mid-September, the sound was beefed up considerably, and so was the musical approach, as the new members brought different musical ideas into the mix. The Grateful Dead's archivists sampled this run of shows previously on 1997's Dick's Picks, Vol. 9, which chronicled the September 16 show.
