Bob Scobey's Frisco Jazz Band, which was usually a septet, is augmented by seven additional musicians on Beauty and the Beat, which is arranged by Matty Matlock. Scobey and singer-banjoist Clancy Hayes are the key players, although the great stride pianist Ralph Sutton is also present. Even with the extra horns, the basic Scobey sound is very much intact. The dozen songs all have something to do with women (most have a female name in its title) and range from some standards ("Alice Blue Gown," "Sweet Lorraine," and "Lulu's Back in Town") to lesser-known.
This is a companion with Vol. 1, which are reissues of the Scoby hits on Good Time Jazz LPs. Scoby carried on the San Francisco revival of traditional jazz started by Lu Watters, kept going by Turk Murphy. Scoby was a top trumpet and had great Frisco musicians working with him. The band became popular because of Clancy Hayes vocals, and this CD has some wonderful Hayes vocals. It's a shame that recordings in those days were kept to about 3 minutes each tune, as it would be great to hear more of the musicians doing solo work. This is a must for your trad jazz collection.
