The faint quiver in vocalist Danny McNamara's falsetto on A Glorious Day is proof alone that the very human quality and a large amount of sincere emotion survived the transition from semi-obscure britpop to fully fledged radio rock. The problem then, though, is where you head after your breakthrough album, and the trouble with This New Day is not so much that it sounds like they chose the wrong path, but that it feels like Embrace managed to dodge the question entirely. A record which sounds markedly more confident in execution than its predecessor, it's capable of achieving that on the simple basis that they've done it all before.

Embrace: This New Day. Mike Pattenden. March 25 2006, 12:00am, The Times. A couple of years ago, Chris Martin wrote a song called Gravity. But he thought that it sounded more like Embrace than Coldplay and so passed it on to the McNamaras, who used it to save their band from extinction and reaped the rewards of a platinum album packed with ballads. With such a result they were never going to tamper with the formula, so This New Day picks up where Out of Nothing left off. Youth returns to the production seat, Richard McNamara sets his guitar to Edge and his brother Danny emotes frantically
